< Previous14A LION APPLIQUE L. 3.2 cm. Bronze. Greek, late 6th cent. B.C. CHF 1,800 Recumbent lion worked in the round with detailed face. Fine engravings indicate the structure of the mane. The slight curvature of the body follows the shape of the vessel’s rim to which it was attached by means of the wide groove on the underside. The size of this decorative applique suggests that it probably adorned an oinochoe. Rear end (transition to the vessel’s handle) lost. Formerly priv. coll. A. L., Basel (BL), collecting period ca. 1960s–2000. Cf. a handle fragment in A. S. Walker, Animals in Ancient Art from the Leo Mildenberg Collection, Part III (Mainz 1996) 102, no. 154.15A HANDLE WITH LION AND MONKEYS L. 13.5 cm. Bronze. Greek, Lakonian, late 6th cent. B.C. CHF 3,800 Handle of a bronze oinochoe (wine jug). In the centre of the crossbar at the top, a lion’s head that would have gazed into the interior of the vessel; two smaller monkey’s heads at the ends. Volutes and a palmette adorn the base of the handle. The back of the handle is decorated by a tapering rib with stippled edges. Cast, with the details of the faces and fur executed in careful cold-work. The hollowed-out part of the crossbar contains the corroded remains of the vessel’s rim. From the estate of the Swiss art dealer and collector Elsa Bloch-Diener (1922–2012), Berne, acquired between 1968 and 1983. Cf. C. M. Stibbe, Frauen und Löwen. Eine Untersuchung zu den Anfängen der lakonischen Bronze- industrie, JbRGZM 43, 1996, pl. 33, 1–2. The handle type was common and widespread in the 6th cent. B.C., see for instance I.
